Professor Masui has studied nucleocytoplasmic interactions during oocyte maturation and early development in the frog and mouse. Using microinjection techniques and a cell-free system, he and his colleagues showed that changes in nuclear activities during oocyte meiosis and mitosis are controlled by two protein factors in the cytoplasm, maturation promoting factor (MPF) and cytostatic factor (CSF).
